Gran Turismo Review: A traditional underdog story in the world of racing.

Less Gran Turismo, More Nissan Adrenaline

Rating: 8 out of 10

In my initial encounter with the Gran Turismo trailer, I felt like I stumbled upon a sneak peek of the latest video game extravaganza, rather than a cinematic venture grounded in a true story. The concept didn't captivate me at first, until I chanced upon The Critical Drinker's upbeat appraisal of the film, which turned out to be quite accurate.

While the movie occasionally veers into the realm of a Nissan promotional campaign more than a Gran Turismo celebration, let's face it – Nissan's standout vehicle was the Skyline, and they regrettably relinquished their early electric vehicle edge embodied by the Leaf. But I digress.

At its core, the film traces the journey of gamer Jann Mardenboroguh (portrayed by Archie Madekwe) as he doggedly chases his improbable aspiration of transforming into a professional racecar driver. This pursuit unfurls through a Nissan marketing ploy conceived by Danny Moore (played by Orlando Bloom), who ropes in a once-failed racer, Jack Salter (enacted by David Harbour), to spearhead the initiative. Djimon Hounsou makes fleeting appearances as Jann's father, delivering a poignant performance, alongside David Harbour, who also shines as the secondary male mentor for our protagonist.

Gran Turismo evokes memories of the 2001 film "Driven," starring Sylvester Stallone – a tale of a has-been driver enlisted to nurture a budding racing talent. Does the plot ring a bell? For those who might not recall or haven't delved into the niche of "Driven," this movie could evoke a sense of familiarity akin to "Cars."

I found myself thoroughly engaged by the film, especially given my own role as a father. The poignant moments tied to fatherly figures hit home with a resounding impact. While the lexicon of automobiles and racing will surely delight aficionados, rookies like me aren't left in the dust; the film adeptly peels back the layers of the racing world. Admittedly, I did have to consult the depths of the internet to comprehend the intricacies of "brake glazing."

In summation, Gran Turismo transforms a seemingly ordinary premise into an emotionally resonant journey, replete with the thrill of racing and the heartfelt connections that buoy individuals toward their ambitions. Whether you're fluent in car-speak or new to the racetrack, this movie guarantees a gratifying ride.
